Do workers like employer driven flexibility? Experimental evidence on work and pay uncertainty and willingness to work
نویسندگان
چکیده
Flexible employment arrangements where workers only provide labour (and are paid) when requested to by their employer have proliferated. How do react the resulting instability in work schedules and pay? This study seeks an answer using experimental methods. 301 low-income, working age, non-student individuals took part on-line experiment simulating standard zero-hours contractual conditions. Results unambiguously support hypothesis that uncertainty discourages work. is not because variability availability reduced total expected pay but also itself avoided, even at cost of lower earnings. Public benefits play important moderating role. Workers more likely accept uncertain access out limited or automatically top up incomes during periods unavailable.

Experimental Evidence on the Divergence Between Measures of Willingness to Pay and Willingness to Accept: The Role of Value Uncertainty
One of the most robust findings in experimental analysis in economics is that subjects often display a large discrepancy between the dollar value they are willing to accept in order to sell an item (WTA) and the dollar value they are willing to pay to purchase it (WTP). We suggest that often when individuals face purchase or sale decisions, the actual private value of an object is uncertain. Th...
متن کاملNon-standard work: what’s it worth? Comparing alternative measures of workers’ marginal willingness to pay
We compare two alternative ways of measuring workers’ marginal willingness to pay (MWP) for four non-standard working arrangements: flexitime, part-time, night work, and rotating shifts. The first method is based on job-to-job transitions within a job search framework, while the second is based on estimating the determinants of subjective well-being. Using BHPS panel data from 1991-2008, we rel...

In this study, we examined the role of work stress and sleepiness in predicting work situation awareness among workers. Methods: The present study was a cross-...
